Blue Moonstone

Timing rather than force.

What the tradition reads it as

The strongest blue flash in the moonstone family, and the tradition follows the optics: the sheen shows only at the right angle, and there is no way to hurry it into showing at the wrong one.

When people wear it

Worn when you are early and know it — the pitch not ready, the conversation not due yet.

What you are actually holding

Adularescence from light scattering between microscopically thin feldspar layers, with nothing applied to the surface. Turn the bead and the blue vanishes completely; that is a genuine structural effect and the fastest way to tell it from coated glass.

How to look after it

6 Mohs and cleaves easily. This is the one to remove before sport, gardening, or anything involving a bag of tools.

The blue flash in moonstone is adularescence: light scattering between microscopically thin layers of feldspar, with nothing applied to the surface. In crystal tradition moonstone is the stone of timing rather than force — the sheen only appears at the right angle, and there is no way to hurry it. Turn the bead and it disappears.

In a reading
