Red jasper was cut into scarabs and seal stones across Egypt and the Mediterranean, prized because it takes an engraving and never chips out of the design. The colour is iron oxide spread evenly through the silica, which is why it is opaque brick rather than translucent. Tradition follows the material: it is kept for holding up, not for starting.
